Interior Design Case Study ~ Family Bathroom

A family bathroom in a period property, untouched for a long time this space needed a full overhaul to bring it inline with modern family living.

We approached this design initially by working through the space planning and layout options, vital in any design, but especially so in a bathroom renovation where existing services and regulations have to be taken into account.

The space is a good size, with enough space for a freestanding bath (top of the wish list) and large walk in shower. We played around with different layout options, including moving the toilet, but to do so would have created a pinch point on entering the room. The option to leave the toilet in situ was made, this saved on plumbing costs and dictated the final layout.

A petite slipper bath from Burlington was the perfect fit, classic design paired with aged brass taps. By using a freestanding bath we have created a greater sense of space, being able to see the floor space underneath was important to the overall aesthetic, especially when other fittings would be floor mounted.

The large walk-in shower has been tiled in a fluted terracotta tile, these tiles are the perfect balance of modern and classic and add a lovely warmth to the shower space. The niche was added to keep the look streamlined and give a handy place for products, our custom design ensured this was the right size for the family’s needs. We chose brass fittings for the shower in a traditional design, placing the controls on the adjacent wall to the shower head means it can easily be turned on to warm without getting wet, the handheld shower head was placed here also to be in easy reach for showering children/pets and cleaning.

We created a concept of earthy warmth. We wanted to design a space that felt cocooning, whilst having a grounding and authentic feel. The lime-wash which we chose to colour drench the walls, ceiling and woodwork is key in achieving this. A restricted colour palette with natural materials was also a significant design decision, to keep the space feeling natural and cohesive.

The washstand was a piece the clients had owned for many years, originally painted we had it stripped to reveal the wood grain and topped with marble to match the splash back. With no space for twin basins, we sourced the Victorian salt glazed sink to fit the bill. Large enough that both children could be brushing their teeth together, it adds lovely patina and character to the earthy warm scheme.

The clients are incredibly happy with their new space, modern design with a traditional influence, it is the perfect sanctuary but equally a hardworking  practical space for family life.
